I am exceptionally pleased that today it was formally announced (at the BBC News monthly comms session) my position of Head of BBC News Labs.

With the help of the Global News team, the BBC News Online team and Connected Studio, we had 5 out of 10 tables put on for the 2014 BBC News Festival “Technology Fair” (trade fair format.
We just finished a great event with the Connected Studio in Belfast: The News Archive Build Studio. Following on from the Creative Studio events in London and Belfast, and the earlier briefings in London and Belfast, this event saw 8 teams create 8 prototypes, all of which will go into audience testing.
We’ve just kicked off a new project called #newsVANE.
I authored a post for The BBC College of Journalism, published today, BBC News Labs: The story’s all about making connections. This was following recent work in Labs, and James Harding (head of BBC News) mentioning us in a talk in November.
Did a quick talk for BBC Academy Fusion today about News Labs & Connected Studio – chaired by Jem Stone. It was all about “Innovation in large organisations”. Malcolm Coles (Product Director at Trinity Mirror) and Martin Trickey (Group Head of Digital at Shed Media Group) also talked. Video to go up shortly.
Following the News Archive briefing in London yesterday, we ran the briefing in Belfast today. ~10 Indies from the Belfast area attended, to look at the scope and context for the News Archive Connected Studio process which is kicking off. I am now very pleased to have moved the BBC News Labs main location to the BBC R&D Central Lab in Euston, London. We are based there now with our partners BBC Connected Studio, as well as UCL Computer Science, and the BBC R&D “Internet Research and Future Services” department.

Today Jeremy Tarling and I ran a demo event at BBC Caversham. We were demo-ing the latest BBC News Labs work, and the BBC Blueroom were also there with their usual array of amazing, cutting-edge consumer equipment.
Today we ran a demo event to show the prototypes and outcomes from the 2012 Summer Labs. The event was an informal “Trade Fair” format, with 5 demo teams each working at a table to demonstrate and explain the prototypes.
Very pleased, along with the BBC News responsive design team, to have launched the responsive MVP for feature phones. We started this back in Spring 2011, when Anthony Sullivan and I made space, and we assembled the team with Matt Chadburn.
