From a cold and wintry London, some business at Google brought me to San Francisco, and I was able to catch up with Amy, Russ, Susan & family.

An interesting 2 day innovation workshop in Berlin, at MIZ Babelsberg, to look at some innovation opportunities with the German public broadcaster ZDF.
We’ve just held #newsHACK in London, in partnership with Global Editors Network, and including an impressive spread of News organisations.
Just spent an enjoyable, and mentally draining unconference weekend with 150 of the great and the good from European Journalism @NEWSGEIST 2015 in Helsinki.
After a quick chat with Miranda McLachlan at HacksHackersLondon, she kindly invited me in to visit the University, and to meet her MA class in computational journalism.
Today I visited the #newsHACK VI event in Cardiff. The Wales Connected Studio team have setup this event, following the #newsHACK approach, to engage with Welsh Universities.
Kindly, Takanobu from NHK sent the NHK Monthly Report on Broadcast Research to us at News Labs, and it features Storyline and #newsHACK write ups, in Japanese.
This event, in Nairobi Garage, was a hack event held by BBC News Labs and Connected Studio to prototype & launch new pilot News services that will reach young African females.
Today we spent at Cafe Ubuntu in Maai Mahiu working on BBC News Labs strategy, and on preparation for the Nairobi Connected Studio #newsHACK event.
We just ran the Tech Briefing for the “Connected Studio: World Service – Africa” event, at the iHub in Nairobi. This covered Juicer, Content API, FrontLine SMS, and WeChat.
At last we got around to visiting James Murphy, George, Laden et al down at the SKY complex in Osterly.
#newsHACK III – Language Technology was a 2 day hack event in London focussed on “Multilingual Automated News Services of the Future”.
Today we demonstrated the “OPTIMAL MEMORY RIG” at the “Digital Economy 2014” conference at Imperial College London. This “Rig” uses BBC Archive clips to trigger an emotional reaction in users, and to measure their “fixation” on topics.
Today James Murphy from SKY NEWS Labs visited us in the Central Lab again, and this time he brought along George and Laden along. BBC News is a large department, and so I am frequently meeting new teams. Today I met a great team from BBC World Service – the YouTube channel editors.
Another amazing tiring, flat-out exhausting demo marathon at MozFest’s 2014 event “Science Fair”. And this year, slightly more bearded men than last year.
We had the pleasure of Melody Kramer popping into the Lab today.

Just had a great day today with Simiao Yu and Dr Chao Wu from Imperial College London. We’re getting started on some work around Neurotechnology feedback loops and media experiences.
Quite an intense workshop today, discussing personalisation, recommendations and how we are going to prioritise in more of the great plans around myBBC.
